Remember the Bush administration’s attempt to enforce immigration laws by forcing employers to fire those with social security number problems? A federal judge ordered an injunction yesterday.
"The government’s proposal to disseminate no-match letters affecting more than eight million workers will, under the mandated time line, result in the termination of employment to lawfully employed workers," the judge wrote. "Moreover the threat of criminal prosecution . . . reflects a major change in DHS policy."...
Chertoff said the ruling underscores the need for Congress to overhaul
its immigration laws, a point that was echoed by Deputy White House
press secretary Scott M. Stanzel early this morning.
Or maybe, I dunno, you could clean up the database? I realize this is all just a gambit to force the business community to lobby harder for immigration reform. But really, as is it’s a toothless gambit. If you actually want to up the stakes you’re going to have to try governing. Crazy I know.
