We’ve got one with North Korea. This apparently involves dismantling, not just halting production, at their reactors and allowing inspections of the aluminum tubes they bought from Russia for probable use in enrichment . "North Korea is expected to disclose the extent of its weapons-grade plutonium, including how much was used in a nuclear test last year." I don’t see any reference to what will be done to their existing nukes though. They’re also supposed to be more forthcoming about the abduction of Japanese citizens.
Terms:
- Removing North Korea from the terrorism list
- Dropping financial sanctions from the 1917 Trading with the Enemy act.
- Plus aid and such we are giving due to the earlier agreement resulting in a pause in production.
Seems like a good deal to me. On a related note, there was an op-ed yesterday in the Post that argued that Iran would demand more.
- Probably the stuff N Korea is slowly getting: "a no-attack pledge, normalized economic and diplomatic relations, economic aid, and removal from the U.S. list of terrorist states"
- "[A] freeze of Israel’s Dimona reactor."
- [A] ban on the U.S. use of nuclear weapons in the Persian Gulf." Specifically, no tactical or other nukes on our carrier groups.
Still seems like a good deal to me, although obviously this deal would also depend on the agreement of the Israelis. It’s important to note that while we’re giving more, we’re also making a deal for no Iranian nukes rather than limiting the number of N. Korean nukes. If Israel doesn’t think they can effectively deter Iran from a nuclear attack, than a verifiable agreement would be a wiser course of action than just building more nukes.
