I’m giddy and tired after watching the first four episodes of BSG season 3. I’d been waiting for this part of the show since my friend Matt told me about it, and it was everything I hoped. But it seems silly to blog about it before I’ve caught up, so here’s a link round-up instead.
- Ray Fisman in Slate reports on findings that Three-Strike laws reduce recidivism but increase violent crime. I don’t feel like paying for the study and can’t tell from the data provided what the impact on the overall violent crime rate is. But based on that data alone, it does seem safe to conclude that three-strikes laws are an inefficient way to reduce recidivism.
- Shankar Vedantam reported on a study that found that people feel good when friends and lovers succeed, unless they’re in competition. Fortunately different specialties even within the same field can mitigate the problem.
- Ezra Klein cites an article on common misperceptions on the advantages of renting versus owning. In short, a house is an asset with a whole lot of constraints. Also the financial advantages don’t tend to take into account closing costs and property taxes.
