3d seems to be coming into its own. It certainly wasn't necessary for the film but provides a nice enhancer, an experience more like surround sound than a gimmick. That said, if 3d isn't available, the film is still worth seeing.
I actually have an autographed copy of the book, thanks Danielle, but it's been a while since I've read it so I'm not well positioned to judge the many changes. I do think the film stands on its own as more than just beautiful stop-motion animation.
